Mike has been a really effective advisor as we developed a sustainability comms strategy for Grosvenor Britain & Ireland. He’s been quick and practical, challenging and insightful, and helped us produce a compelling narrative that engages colleagues, business partners and a whole range of non-sustainability focused influencers. The work was done successfully against the backdrop of Covid and the need to deliver all of this remotely, none of which really impacted on the project at all.

A sustainable business advocate, Mike Barry’s first significant environmental role involved working as a committee member for the World Wildlife Fund. It was after this that he embarked on a career that would run for about 15 years, working for M & S. During this time, Mike also chaired the World Environment Center (where he was also a board member).
No matter where Mike served, he never failed to show his zeal for sustainable business. By enlightening the corporate world on the need to create sustainability strategies, there is no doubt that Mike has carved a niche for himself. And his efforts to make the world a better place have received well-deserved recognition. The Guardian Group named him the Sustainable Business Innovator of 2011.
One of Mike’s greatest achievements can be traced to his time at M & S, where he oversaw the running of a sustainability program called Plan A, right from its formative stages. Under his watch, the program would deliver a whopping £750 million in business benefits in a span of just a decade. The Plan also saw the company adopt carbon neutrality across all its spaces, including stores, offices, and warehouses.

He’s been that critical friend, challenging us to be both technically credible as well as engaging in our story telling. It’s been good to have a chemist navigate us through the interface of science/innovation/business model disruption/engagement of colleagues/customers/stakeholders.
