Shanuki de Alwis is an Advocacy & Cause Communications Consultant based in Sri Lanka, where she integrates her 23 years of experience in Advertising and brand communications with her passion for social causes. A former Senior Technical Advisor on Advocacy and Accountability at the International Planned Parenthood Federation and a Strategic Planner-cum-Creative Director at both local and international network advertising agencies, she is currently engaged in building creative strategy, capacity, documentation and communication for development programs in the South Asia and East Asia.
She is also a trainer, freelance creative director, public speaker & well-known theatre practitioner on stages in Colombo. A TEDx speaker and popular podcaster , Shanuki is the Creator and Host of the award-winning program ‘Shhh…’- Sri Lanka’s first English online community talk-show on YouTube that addresses social stigmas and gender empowerment narratives- a passion project that earned recognition as an alternative voice for social justice by the global i-probono movement and awards for community empowerment.
Shanuki advocates for mental health, gender equality and animal welfare. She was recognized as one of Sri Lanka’s Top 50 professional and career women by Women In Management in 2020, conferred the citation of ‘Sri Lanka Woman Leader’ in 2019- a title endorsed by the World Women Leadership Congress and CMO Asia, and appointed an ambassador for Goal no. 15 (Life on Land) of the UN Sustainable Development Goals by The Road To Rights International. In August 2021, she was selected to join a 12-man research team for ‘The Cheetah Project’ in Kenya and in 2022 she was selected as one of 15 global Digital Community Stewards by Search For Common Ground and Meta, to engage in digital peacebuilding and online social cohesion.
Her work includes numerous presentations and social advocacy campaigns created for mobilization and change; from Sexual and Reproductive Health & Rights, animal welfare, mental health, gender empowerment, green initiatives and education to peace & reconciliation.
