Prof Dr Larissa Suzuki, also known as Lara Suzuki, is an award-winning computer scientist, engineer, professor, author, entrepreneur, board member, philanthropist, and inventor. She is neurodivergent (Autism and ADHD), a pianist and violinist. With an impressive list of titles including Professor, EUR ING, BSc, MPhil, PhD, CEng, FIET, FRSA, AFHEA, and IntPE, she is a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Engineers and holds the Freedom of the City of London.
Dr. Suzuki’s career in engineering started at the young age of 16. At 21, she founded her first business (App Studio), and at 22, she became a university lecturer teaching in BSc in Computer Science and in MBA programs.
She holds a BSc in Computer Science, a MPhil in Electrical Engineering from the University of Sao Paulo, a Certificate in Integrated Business Processes from the University of Duisburg-Essen, and a PhD in Computer Science from UCL in a joint program with MIT School of Architecture and Planning and Imperial College Business School.
Dr. Suzuki has made significant contributions to various fields of engineering, including Smart Cities, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Federated Learning and Computations, Emerging Technologies (e.g. Mixed Reality, Internet of Things), Computing Applied to Medicine (Cancer diagnosis – breast and lung), and Operations Research (e.g. Forecasting). She is also an inventor and has recently filed 10 additional patents.
Currently, Dr. Suzuki works as Head of Data and AI for Google Cloud, alongside Vint Cerf on the Interplanetary Internet Project at Nasa JPL & IPNSIG, and on Sustainable AI through Federated Computations with Google Office of the CTO. Her work on the Interplanetary Internet is being supervised by NASA engineer Leigh Torgerson. She also continues her academic work at UCL, Harvard University, University of Quebec, and Oxford University. She co-supervises a PhD student working on the application of Deep Learning to aid the early diagnosis of Lung Cancer.
Dr. Suzuki has received numerous awards, grants, and recognitions from various institutions such as HRH Princess Royal, Royal Academy of Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, McLaren Racing, Intel, Google, Academy for Computing Machinery, the Institute of Engineering and Technology, Heidelberg Laureate Forum Foundation, Microsoft Research, and EPSRC, among many others, for her contributions to industry and international science.
In 2021, Dr. Suzuki was elected the Engineer of the Year by the Engineering Talent Awards (Partnership with Royal Academy of Engineering and Sponsored by McLaren Racing). She is also the 2021 Rooke Award winner of the Royal Academy of Engineering.
