See keynotes with Sathnam SangheraThere is not a more toxic conversation out there, in the 21st Century, than the conversation about the British empire. As a nation, we have struggled to find a sensible way of navigating the important history. Following his two bestselling books on the subject, praised critically by all who hold an opinion, Sathnam Sanghera has found a way to open this difficult conversation expressing the idea that opposite things can be true at the same time. For instance, that British empire was both responsible for seeding democracy across the world, and for seeding geopolitical chaos, without having to come down on one side or the other. Embracing profound contradictions can be liberating in many other spheres of life: to help us talk about racism and other knotty issues; to help us understand people and to help us have difficult conversations in the workplace and in our wider working relationships.
Sathnam Sanghera grew up 1980’s Wolverhampton. The son of Punjabi immigrants, he couldn’t speak English until he started school. His journey to become a multi best-selling author was not predictable, nor orthodox, and still surprises Sathnam himself. He has learnt about social mobility, code-switching (between both languages and cultures), emotional and intellectual resilience as well as dealing with severe mental illness within his close family. He has faced up to trolling, learnt to handle the media and social media, and understood the art of being creative in a world that doesn’t make it easy for you to be creative. In this session Sathnam Sanghera will tell the story of how a child who grew up in a house without books earnt a first-class degree in English from the University of Cambridge and became a prize-winning author.
