Simone Cheli, PhD.
I asked Dr. Margaret Rutherford to come to the University of Arkansas Honors College and hold a session on “Perfectionism” aimed at super ambitious honors scholars who struggle with maintaining the high expectations of an active research agenda, service, academics, and engagement with the realities of the stresses stemming from these ambitions. Dr. Rutherford exceeded any expectation I had for the workshop, compelling student, staff member, faculty, and community participant alike both to comprehend the intricacies of this “hidden depression” and to interrogate their own behaviors and identities, mining them for evidence of the “Perfectionism” factor. I walked away impressed. Indeed, I have asked Dr. Rutherford to give a similar session to students enrolled in large public honors colleges across the U.S. and a second workshop to administrators and staff members working in honors colleges. I expect there to be many follow-up requests for on-campus panels. Rutherford simply is that good.
