In psychology as well as in literature we sometimes talk about different character types in an attempt to divide people into more or less general categories.

There are many different character types, from stereotypes to archetypes; the brave hero, the evil villain, the trusty helper, the sad one, the angry one, the happy one, etc.

What character types do we know and when does it make sense to talk about them? And when does it make no sense at all?
