The earliest modern detective story finds it roots among literary gothic masters such as E. T. A. Hoffmann and Edgar Allan Poe. Today the genre remains strong within literature, in movies, on TV and with the theatre. Also many computer and video games as well as comic books relate to the detective story.

Detective stories typically revolve around crime, a murder, a robbery, a conspiracy, and the main protagonist or protagonists try to solve the mystery and catch the criminals, often by means of analysis and psychological approach.

Keynote speakers on detective stories sometimes focus on the genre in general, often providing historical insight or choose to take a closer look at specific authors, movies, TV-series and so on.
