Rugby is a style of football that developed at Rugby School during the 19th century. The sport was one of many versions of football played at English public schools at this time. The two main types of rugby is Rugby League and Rugby Union. These two forms share the same objective of getting the ball over the line to score a try, however, the specific rules are different, and they are considered two separate sports.

Rugby Union is both a professional and amateur game and is dominated by the first tier unions.

Rugby Union is administered by the International Rugby Board (IRB). It is the national sport in New Zealand, Wales, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga and Madagascar, and is the most popular form of rugby globally.

Rugby League is likewise both a professional and amateur game, administered on a global level by the Rugby League International Federation. There are two major professional competitions; the Australasian National Rugby League and the European Super League.
